Week 10 P3 Prelim Crit Notes
Working with Lindsey and Linsie:
Most of the critique was focused on the color scheme that we are using. Seems to give the theme of a clothing store like Forever 21. Needs to look more "grown up" in its appearance, such as making some of the color less soft and feminine and more mature.
Specifically, they informed us that the choice of Salmon as a color should be changed to something else.
Everything else is looking pretty good, they like the idea of the app and are looking forward to seeing it implemented.

Unit 9 Reading Response
Unit 9 Reading Response
For our final reading assignment, it seemed fitting to learn
about the "Don'ts" of mobile app design. And the principles to follow
to ensure success in the venture. Even more fitting was the fact that the
author chose the first of his countdown to address appropriate process.
One of my previous partners in school and I were just having
the conversation about how we often end up doing the wire frame before the
concept sketches. It seems that being in a digital world, we often make the
mistake of assuming that using a computer is so much easier than using a pen
and paper. However, I recall Doug Heinlein telling us on many occasions that
the best tool for a designer is exactly that: a pen and paper. For the past few
quarters, I have been noticing that my flow goes so much better when I am
drawing first and then hitting the computer after.
And, like true form with following the book we have been
reading, it's important to keep things simple and not to rely on the garish or ostentatious.
Opening animations can be data-hungry and often confuses the message of the
app. Having a simple splash page that gets the point across is often times the
best measure and practice to take.
Number 6 is a very important issue to address, as well,
however, for different reasons than what the author pointed out. While the
author was stating that it's important to have a progress indicator to let the
user know that things are still working, I presumed the headline was talking
about something else: networking. Creating something for the public requires a
great deal of connection and it's important to constantly keep your fans in the
loop. Keeping silent and not doing any connection will alienate your possible
customers.
It's been difficult for me to break the barrier of social
networking, but I am getting better. This entire class has been incredibly
enlightening, as it has helped me realize the importance of simplicity in
design. In a world that cherishes special effects and awesome visuals, when
trying to get a message across, oftentimes the most appropriate language is the
most simplistic.

* Feel for the app looks really nice.
* Idea seems to be a strong idea.
* Interface is recognizable, as it looks somewhat like the Netflix interface.
* Color scheme works very well.
* Logo looks nice, too.
Things to consider:
* As this is a potential business adventure, we need to consider who is going to fund this kind of a project. Who is going to work here? How will they be hired?
* In the Creative Statement, make sure to address how this will be funded and how you will hire your workers.
* There are freelance stenographers and interpreters who could work for this company on a contract basis. Since there is a "Wish List" page, make sure that the wish is sent to the appropriate freelancer.
* Where is the money coming from? Benefactors? Travel gurus like Rick Steves or Abe Frohman? Make this real, as it is a possible app that can work.
* Make sure that the client is well-defined: People who want to learn, but must have a love for movies and film.

Unit 8 Reading Response
Unit 8 Reading Response
This was a wonderful article to read, as not only is it
written by a student (at the time) but it comes from a perspective of extreme
professionalism and passion. One of the aspects of creative briefs that has
always been a struggle for me is the creation of personas. For some reason,
this has been a huge obstacle for me, and now that I have done several briefs
over the past few quarters, I have come to realize just how important it is.
The author of this article conveys the importance of this crucial step very
well, showing that without understanding the target audience through more ways
than simple demographics, there is no foreseen success.
Great ideas never find fruition, due to the fact that no one
needs it. We, as designers, might feel our ideas are the most amazing things
the world has ever seen, but unless a majority of people could use it, it
becomes irrelevant.
I enjoy the fact that the author references Don't Make Me
Think in this article, as it makes it clear that the book is relevant to many
different designers and developers. The idea of focus, simplicity, and clarity
seems to be the ongoing theme, and once again, the book we have been reading
this entire quarter shows just how helpful its messages are.
The amount of research done by this team that is referenced
in the article shows how much time is put into R & D before the
implementation is actually started. I believe this is an error that many new
developers make when they are trying to create new apps. The mistake of putting
the cart before the horse seems to be rampant, and it's incredibly important to
measure before cutting.

Unit 7 Reading Response
Chapter ten was particularly appropriate for the upcoming project, as it discusses in great detail how to approach the design and development of mobile-based websites. The supplemental reading of the website assigned, was also very helpful, as the distinction between Responsive and Adaptive design is still under debate, at least in my opinion it is. This specific distinction debate is a constant thorn in my side, as though I understand the difference between them, I simply have trouble deciding on which one is more appropriate. Adaptive seems to be a better choice, as the design itself takes for granted that there will be specific parameters of size, regardless of the myriad devices on the market.
For example, there are dozens of different sized mobile devices, but they are all in a particular range of size, which makes adaptive a better choice, as the layout and design are designated for a particular pixel count and that they work perfectly for the given device. Responsive seems like it could get messy, as instead of reorganizing the data and content, it simply makes it smaller. Currently, I am working on my personal website, and am leaning more towards a media query for Adaptive design, as that seems to be a better look.
The other aspect I was glad to see mentioned in the chapter was the fact that it helps to have a link to the desktop site on the mobile site. Call me old-fashioned, but I do like to feel safe in what I know. I know this is probably the worst thing I could say as a web designer, but it’s nice to know that the desktop version of websites is not dead and that on a mobile device, I can still access the desktop version of a particular website.
There are numerous sources for Adaptive design in the website that was part of the reading that I will be bookmarking, as they are very helpful to get me to where I wish to be.

Project 03 Concept / Ideas
1. An App that allows you to adjust / manipulate the narrator's voice for Audio Books.
Sometimes, when we are listening to audio books, the voice of the narrator does not appeal to the audience, or simply does not fit with the style of the book. This particular application would allow for people to manipulate certains aspects of the voice, ranging from tamber to pitch.
2. A website that works directly with a movie production to be able to incorporate subtitles for many different languages.
Oftentimes, I find myself wishing I could know the script of a movie in a different language. Also, I do enjoy many foreign films and sometimes, they don't have subtitles in English. Finally, there are many movies that many foreign people enjoy that don't have their own language in subtitles. This site would be able to work in realtime with the movie.
3. A website that is used as a search engine repository for inspirational works of art.
There are many projects I have done that required specific works of art for inspiration, but there is no site or search engine that truly delivers what we, as artists, are looking for. This site would be directly linked to any artist's server, where all of their public works of art would have specific search word parameters for people to see, without the hassle of surfing through endless pages of search engines.
4. App/Website that works as your personal chef.
There have been many times that I have looked in my cupboard, wondering what to make and having no idea what ingrediants work with each other. This app would work as a personal chef, where you could list what ingrediants you have and the system would generate possible meals to make.
5. App where you could take a picture of something and the program would give you a definition of the object in the picture, much like a visual dictionary. This would work on the same lines as the program that listens to music and identifies the artist and song. However, this would be more complicated, as you could take a picture of a structure, like the Pantheon, and the program would list the definition and description.

Unit 6 Reading Response
Designing for the iOS seems daunting to me, as I have trouble with designing with clarity for such small devices. Using Vector graphics has helped me through this particular apprehension; however, it still seems difficult to manage, as I always want to cram as much information into something as I can. Steve Jobs accomplished a great feat by stripping things down to the bare minimum and finding out what the core experience consists of. And he did it very well, obviously.
Just as the message in Don’t Make Me Think is clearly keeping things simple, so too, does it appear to be a prominent theme in this particular selection. The idea of not using gradients or bezels or even drop shadows in app content is a great one, considering that it can often disorient and confuse. The same is applied into negative space. I feel that when I first started designing, I was afraid of negative space, but after seeing it utilized correctly in many different areas, I see how useful it can be to truly bring out the important content on the screen.
Keeping a design simple makes it easy to use and most people are not looking for ostentatious; they are looking for easy, especially since the modern society appreciates every convenience afforded to it.
In regards to the article discussing Skeuomorphic design, I did not find the subject very interesting. Reason being, design is something that is ever evolving and trying to define which “style” is better seems unnecessary. Personally, I enjoy the Skeuomorphic design for certain things that make me feel nostalgic, or if I want to “feel” the atmosphere of a certain site. However, it is not necessary, and to paint the design world with one single brush seems like an ignoble action.

Project 02_further notes
Target audience: Female 15-25
General interests are fantasy romance; not looking for any storyline that is too deep in emotions.
Not complicated storylines. Simple to understand. cover design for the book implies a childhood fantasy. The petals of the ivy look almost mechanical, as if they are made out of metal strands. With this is mind, we should continue to convey this idea into the website.
The Header should only have a few different choices, as this is going to be a scrolling page, with parallax scrolling for the nav only.
The background will have sparkling stars. Not too overpowering, so it doesn't take away too much attention from the book itself / product itself. Color scheme will remain the same (blue and gold).
Typography should be similar to the font used. Can't really use the actual type for the book as this is more Hero-Type than body-copy. But, the theme will still be whimsical and fantastic.
The parallax scroll for the nav will use ivy, and as the user scrolls down the page, the ivy on the sides will "grow" inward, as if stretching towards the center. As the user scrolls up, the ivy will recede. Simple animation will be used.

I found these two chapters to be very helpful for someone who is wanting to get into the world of website development. What I have noticed about this book is that it has a great way of bringing out the obvious which we often take for granted. We know that simple is what we all want, but for some reason, designers want to make things look flashy, complicated, and ostentatious. The result is the exact opposite of what we want.
Likewise, in this chapter, the idea of a focus group always sounds like a good idea, because the concept is what's been bred into our minds as the "correct" way to approach infallible design.
I was always under the impression that it was a focus group that was needed to make a nice website. However, over the course of the past few months, I have noticed that it's not been a focused group that I have been showing my site to for direction, but rather random people I work with who have very different objectives and hopes. Without realizing it, I have been using my coworkers as Usability testers. And, without realizing it, they have been helping me solve the most glaring issues. I have always been worried about taking care of the minute details, when I should have been focusing on fixing the main issues.
I loved reading the test script at the end of the 9th chapter. This was quite enlightening, as it shows what matters to everybody. The fact that the test subject talked about color first shows that designers should be focusing on the big things that are important to people, rather than focusing on the minute details that most people might not see, or ignore, or even disregard. Color is the most important aspect when it comes to design, and that was her first comment. Had it been a color of which she did not approve, she might have simply left without looking at what is important to the business / website itself.
For my project in this class (Portfolio Website) I have been using too much gray tones and shades, when I have been ignoring colors. I have also been trying to mix up textures and patterns as means of separation, when I should be keeping things simple and organized. This chapter was very helpful and I enjoyed reading it immensely.

Unit 4 – Reading Response
There is an undeniable theme in this book that the author is desperately trying to convey: Simplicity is the key to a successful website. In this day of digital wonders, the majority of people have attention spans that can be measured in blinks, and despite fireworks and special effects capturing attention, it doesn’t mean that a user will stay at a website if there is no content. What is most important is to convey the main message in a way that is easily noticeable and read.
I especially love the four questions that need to be asked when looking at a webpage, and have found that over the years, I have chiseled my homepage dramatically from the ostentatious to the simplistic, as I should be letting my content do the proverbial “shock and awe.” The Homepage should be drawing people in, no doubt, but it has be easy to understand and legible. Plus, there has to be a purpose to the site for the alleged product or service. Too much glamour can easily confuse people and is often used as a smokescreen for things that are shallow.
The dissection of many Homepages is very important, as it allows us to see what works and what doesn’t. It also allows us to be able to learn from others’ mistakes. The idea of utilizing taglines for different media is also enlightening. It never occurred to me that a tagline that works for media will not necessarily work for the web or for radio. I always assumed the opposite. However, it stands to reason that since a TV ad is essentially reading the content to the viewer, it is an entirely different situation when the viewer has to read it for themselves.
The section on Pull-Down Menus is very interesting. It has some good points as to why a designer should choose to use them sparingly, as they have very noticeable “cons” associated with them. The idea that they are twitchy and hard to scan is very valuable to know, and proves the earlier point that even though it looks advanced, the message can get lost in the prestige.
In summary, the author wishes to maintain his stance that a clear and concise message is the best way to go. Special effects and glitter can capture attention, but if there is nothing behind it, or if the message and intent of the page can’t be seen, than it’s all smoke in mirrors.

This is voted as one of the best home page designs, yet, I wonder why. First, it comes off as a search engine (that part is pretty clear), but then, it also has several different links to different kinds of social media. As social media is ubiquitous, why do we need a third party to get us to the sites? Seems to be a superfluous use of a website, that has too much going on.

Another example of a search engine, but the tagline is very clear on what the page intends to do. It is a simple service that acts like an address book to the most popular sites. This eludes to the importance of a tagline, especially one that is clear and concise.

You pin inspiration…a concept that was explained to me by my wife, as I couldn’t figure it out. When my wife and I were traveling in London, there was one thing that we could not stand: Their street-naming convention. It was awful. All of the street signs were on the sides of buildings (some of the time, they did not even exist), and most of the time, they were hidden by trees. Suffice to say, we had to ask for directions many times and had to have a map on us at all times. This being said, I love the fact that the author points out the same thing with Los Angeles. We need big street signs when we are driving and we need to feel safe with where we are going, and web navigation should be no different.
I love tabs and feel that I need to incorporate them more in my web sites. They are safe, easy to use, and very familiar, which is one of the subjects in the last chapter. Familiarity goes a long way.

When my wife and I were traveling in London, there was one thing that we could not stand: Their street-naming convention. It was awful. It is safe to say that the most prominent message in these collections of chapters is to Keep Things Simple. When I was first designing webpages, I was using Netscape Composer…that’s how long it’s been since I have been designing sites. I was always under the presumption that people will want to read absolutely everything that I had to put in my website. I could not have been more mistaken. It’s true: we scan, we don’t read. I am guilty of it myself and will come by it honestly. When I go to a website, I navigate the way I shop: I know what I want and don’t need anything else.
I enjoy the fact that the author also points out many times that a fast-loading web site is the best way to go. This was a subject matter that I addressed when I first got into game asset design. I always thought that if we can make something look gorgeous with as much detail as possible, we should. Then I was taught what a data ceiling is and what “low-poly” count is. This applies to web design as well. Making something look beautiful does not necessisarily mean to make it filled with data. Simplicity can be beautiful, as well.

Dan Brown is a fantastic author, who is not afraid to bring up topics that are both controversial and enigmatic. His website portrays this particular enigmatic ideal with how the foreground panels and frames move slower than the background, which makes it seem like an ancient machine.

I am actually using this website as a "what not to do" example. Steven King is synonymous with the word horror, but his website is lackluster and seems juvenile. Even the typography that is used for his name does not give any hint of horror...it seems more like science-fiction. There is no interactivity with the website, nor is there any invention to it. It just does not convey any aspect of an international best seller like him.

Lee Goldberg is a prolific writer, probably best known for his works for the hit show, Monk. His website is very fluid and has several different areas for users to peruse. Very well put together, and easily navigable. This is one to which an author can aspire.

E. L. James has made herself very famous with her "50 Shades" books, and though I am not a fan of her work, I will definitely say that her website is a good-looking site. Cassandra Clare is the best selling author of the Mortal Instruments series. Her website is beautiful, to say the least. Week Three
Name your intended audience (the person(s) you need to persuade.)
As my platform is essentially the visual beauty of the written word, as well as literature itself, my target audience will be on the higher end of the educational spectrum. Age group will be between 28-45. Though the age group nearly spans 20 years, the fact that this incorporates college graduates and people who continue to educate themselves beyond the necessities found in a curriculum will therefore narrow down the size of the target. Education level for my target audience, as mentioned above, will be Bachelor’s Degrees and above. Also, the target audience will consist of those who continue to educate themselves beyond the scope of earning a degree. Financial statistics for my target audience are irrelevant, as my products revolve around literature and books, which will not exceed prices of 20 USD.
Describe what you need to inform and persuade them of:
To promote my product, I will need to utilize styles and themes that are indicative of my writing genre. As my work generally tends towards medieval and mythological ideals, the themes will gravitate more towards earthly tones, mixed with more a gothic style of writing: In addition, the artwork that will be used will conjure images of knights, castles, ancient battlegrounds, ancient technology, as well as calligraphy seen in works such as the Book of Kells. I will also incorporate drawings and artworks I have done myself that relate to the books I have written and am promoting. Also, as typography is one of my focuses, I will have selections posted randomly as either background images or as simple decorations to enhance the tonal message.
The goals of the site are: To promote myself as a graphic artist and an author. With the invent of eBooks, many authors have been coming out of the woodwork, as there are barely any production costs associated with electronic publishing. To stand out from this abundance, I wish to showcase myself as not only an author, but as a graphic artist and designer that incorporates artistic design into the cover and the body of the work.
The ultimate message/philosophy (about who you are): I am a writer and an artist. I wish to be able to tell my stories through artistic design on top of the creative aspects of my story-telling. It’s not just about telling the story; it’s visualizing the ambiance through simple designs and themes that conjure images that will only enhance the experience. I am a disciple of tradition when it comes to telling a tale. I am not about mass-publication. My design is specific and unique, as are my stories.
What is the story you are telling? There are several stories that I am telling, as I am a story-teller. However, the story behind the website is one of an author who wishes to be the driving force behind all aspects of book publication: from the concept of the story to actual binding of the book. It is the story of someone who is enamored by the written word. I wish for people to see me as someone beyond an author. I want them to see me as an artist beyond words.
What descriptive words can you use to describe the ‘vibe’ of your site: Mysterious and ominous, as the stories I write are of the darker sort. Decorative, as the type I will be using will be more than just body type. Shadowy; intriguing; cold/passive, yet inviting; Medieval; haunting.
Write a 200 word concept statement based on the user, your persuasion, navigation and the assets: The written word has taken many forms and has evolved over the centuries to conform to the needs of the reigning societies and civilizations. It is my purpose to preserve the aesthetics of our ancient ways of telling stories, as well as to maintain the interests of an ever-changing demographic. I intend to marry classical technique with modern scope. The invent of the eBook has addressed two main concerns that have kept people from having a library: (1) With a Kindle or other portable electronic device, there is no further need for shelf space. (2) Costs for buying an eBook are significantly lower than an actual paperbound book. As such, the general public of readers has turned more to digital than tangible and look for something to read with ease. However, regardless of this increased urgency and impatience, readers still look for themes that pertain to their interest. Therefore, I wish to showcase my work through the ideals, styles and themes that pertain to a more medieval way of life, much to the genre of fantasy and mythology.
The navigation will be simple, with a maximum of a dozen pages through which to peruse. The decorations will seem dark and shaded, but the imagery will be intriguing, much like the feeling we get when we look into a haunted forest. Our minds tell us it is dark and foreboding, but we are still persuaded by curiosity to press on ahead. Those who read fantasy and mythology are prone to visuals, which is why my gallery will showcase map drawings, and other assets of character rigs that pertain to my stories. There will also be random placement of typography that will be in the theme of medieval and ancient styles.
List the assets you need to persuade the user: I will be showcasing the most recent book series that have been published: All three books of the Arterian Redemption; the four books written so far in the Witching Hour series; the first book in the Broken Judgment; and the first book of the Calistis Series (The Nequia). These selections will be shown with a selected background that relates to the subject matter (Haunted forests for the Witching Hour, scenes from the underworld for the Nequia, Castles and rolling landscapes for the Arterian Redemption, and a graveyard for the Broken Judgment. Also, there will be map drawings that will be done through Illustrator shown in a gallery for people to view. This will be for the Arterian Redemption. This will include scanned images of the original map drawings adjacent to finished and polished works through illustrator. If given enough time, there will also be a couple character models of some of the creatures featured in the Arterian Redemption and the Witching Hour that will be produced through AutoDesk Maya and Mudbox.
For the purpose of structuring your website portfolio pages, list the categories of work you will show: The categories will be selections of my written works for each of the series aforementioned, as well as a small gallery of 3D-rendered graphics of creatures and other assets that revolve around the Arterian Redemption series and the Witching Hour.

Introduction and Chapter One -- "Don't Make me Think"
As someone who has been raised to be a person of routine and discipline, it is entirely refreshing to read a book that states: "Designing, building, and maintaining a great Web site isn't easy. It's like golf: a handful of ways to get the ball in the hole, a million ways not to."
This is a wonderful analogy for someone like me: a person who loves to design and wants to hear professionals say there are multiple ways to get things right and what one person says works could be different from another. This is fine, so long as they both get a successful outcome. I need to hear this.
I am also a fan of researching for inspiration. I used to believe that checking on other people's work was essentially cheating, but being a designer now for ten years, I am thankfully rid of that mentality.
The approach on simplicity is a useful one. My first website that I designed back in 1999 was awful...of course, most websites, by comparison to today's standards are exactly that, but I wanted to put everything on every page. It was a disaster. So, cutting down the words in half and then taking half of what's left is good advice, as shown on page one of the first chapter. Great rule...most people could learn a lot from that one suggestion.
Keeping things obvious is a great idea as well. If you are selling something, make it easy to find. Clutter will only deter people, which means death for any business.
Making pages self-evident, as discussed in the latter portion of the first chapter makes a lot of sense, as well. I never took the time to think of the many mental steps we take when doing a simple task. As our attention span shortens the more interference we get from the ever-growing presence of ads. This translates to this simple fact: Keep it simple, stupid.

Week One Homework

Inspirations
Though this site is non-responsive, it is beautifully
developed. The slideshow div is very well put together, nice slide-transition
is applied to the images.
There is a good amount of <li> elements in the header,
giving the audience plenty to navigate and peruse without having too much to
wade through.
There is not too much to scroll through, so the audience
does not have to deal with too much information all at once.
The online bookshop is a good touch too. Fans of Tolkien's
know exactly where to go and don't have to deal with any 3rd party vender to
get his books.
Kate Morton is a historical mystery writer and her webpage
shows her style very well. The different divs for this webpage are well placed
and have a very nice line with each other for sight.
Her "Journal" is a well set-up blog and holds a
good measurement with the other pages, as far as design is concerned. The book page is nice a clean, not too much
clatter. The black and white images go well with the photographs.
I like the header and the design that it takes.
The Events page is probably the only issue I have with the
page, as it has events that are over 4 years old still listed. It gives the
appearance that this page is not refreshed as much as it should be.
Overall, I really like the page and it's look. Very clean
and not too obnoxious with the graphics.
Game of Thrones has taken TV by storm and though Martin's
website a few years ago was laughable, it has become quite beautiful.
The Header design is well designed, straight forward, and
has a good type choice.
The scrolling slideshow is put together very well.
I like how his blog is called "Not a Blog", and
feel that the blog looks great.
This website is a credit to Martin's fans. It shows that he
cares a great deal about who is reading his books.
Though this is not the site for an author, John Howe is a
magnificent artist and has a website that shows it. His logo design is very
well done, as is his header. The small work of art that is on the top-right
portion of the Header is an especially nice touch.
The Title Div is a nice touch; keeps the pages put together
and gives it a nice, clean design.
The contact page and the footer is nice and legible.
There is easy navigation to all of the pages. The only thing
that I don't like, however, is his Portfolio page. He is a great artist, but it
is done in lists. It is only when you click on a link that the art is shown,
but there should at least be a thumbnail on the link.
